This portrait of John Ash is the 2nd In My Office photo in my new diggs at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Ophthalmology.

This move was such a great one for so many reasons, not the least of which is the leadership.  As we are seeing <waves arms> just about everywhere in the world right now, leadership matters, especially when trying to push the boundaries of science which is what the mission of vision research here in Ophthalmology at Pitt is all about. Drs. José Sahel and John Ash have curated a phenomenal group of people here to understand vision and discover therapies for vision loss in retinitis pigmentosa, AMD, and glaucoma. This is the right environment where we can push the boundaries of our science to understand how retinas are wired and how retinal circuitry breaks in retinal disease.  Even further, we want to push retina forward as a model for understanding how complex neuronal systems undergo degeneration in diseases like Alzheimer’s and I can think of no better place to do that work than here, largely because of the leadership.

Thank you John. Looking forward to lots more exciting science here.
