I had a very fast, whirlwind trip to NYC to take care of some science business, meet some other scientists for discussions, attend Waiting for Godot on Broadway, and eat some good food all with good friends.  I am fortunate to have so many good people in my life as this trip was more than a little anxiety producing.

On my last visit to NYC, Hilari and I had a wonderful conversation on the train into the city.  I then checked into the hotel, and was headed over to a friend’s house for dinner when Hilari texted me saying she was feeling funny. I tried calling back and that was the last communication we ever had. I ran straight back to the airport trying to get home to her that afternoon, but could not make it the same day, even with phenomenal efforts and willingness to spend outrageous amounts of money. Turns out I could not even charter a private flight as the flight crews were not available, forcing me to fly back the next morning.

Needless to say, this trip was a little traumatic. Especially when standing on the train platform and realizing I was standing in the same spot where I texted Hilari a photo and we started our last conversation.

This trip was made so much better because I was able to meet up with good people like Brian Hofland from Research to Prevent Blindness for breakfast, meet with my friend Jan Grimm over at Memorial Sloan Kettering, meet with my friends David Schoppik and Kathy Nagel for dinner, and then meet up with Fatima Abbas and company for dinner and a Broadway show.
