Science has always been political going back to Galileo.
This cuts both ways. Vannevar Bush helped establish the modern scientific establishment in America through public funding which made America a superpower. But modern corporate/GOP pushback against science has undermined American science.
Vannevar’s book, Science The Endless Frontier is a great read and a well made case for why government must support science.
